Me: “So you are on a Mac? This game is not supported on a Mac. I can’t help you. I’m sorry.”

Customer: “No, it isn’t. I am running windows 98.”

Me: “Look at the side of the computer. Is there a big apple logo on it?”

Customer: “Of course there is. It’s an Apple computer.”

Me: “Which means it’s MacOS…this game does not run on that OS.”

Customer: “But I am in Windows mode.”

Me: “Are you using SoftWindows to emulate a Windows 98 OS?”

Customer: “Yes?”

Me: “We don’t support our titles on that.”

Customer: “What if I tried changing the drivers?”

Me: “No, that wouldn’t work sir.”

Customer: “What if I tried changing other settings?”

Me: “I’m afraid not. Sir, if you want me to help get it working the system it was designed for I would be happy to do that but I can’t help with emulated Window OS’s on a Mac.”

Customer: “What if I tried it on my games console?”

Me: “The Windows version of this game won’t work on a…hang on. Take the disk out of the drive and tell me what color the bottom of it is.”

Customer: “Black.”

Me: “This is the console version of the game. Did you try it on your console?”

Customer: “Yes. I worked fine there.”

Me: “So, why are you trying to run a console game on a Macintosh with an emulated version of Windows on it?”

Tom Cruise’s stunt biking (No Comments)

Tom Cruise crashed a teenage fan’s dirt bike after re-enacting stunt scenes from one of his action movies.

The screen legend was reportedly urged to have a go on the speedy two-wheeled vehicle after watching a youngster drive around outside the Scientology Celebrity Centre in Hollywood, when he lost control, crashed and ended up scraping the bike all up the side.

The teenager reportedly shouted to Tom: “Hey, show me some of those cool moves you did in ‘Knight and Day’!”

However, after showing off with a few wheelies the 48-year-old star lost his balance, fell off and damaged the bike.

According to the National Enquirer magazine, he said: “Guess I got a bit carried away. Give me your name and phone number, and I’ll have it fixed good as new.”

However, the teen decided he would rather keep the bike in its smashed state as long as the actor signed the damage he had made.

The actor laughed, then returned inside the building for a pen before scrawling his moniker along the scuffed metal work.

As he started to head home, the teenager shouted at Tom: “Thanks for breaking my bike in!”

The Top Twenty Starship Captains (2 Comments)

I found this list regarding the top 20 star ship captains. What makes it interesting is “WOW” how can one choose. I am obviously a huge Star Wars Fan and Han Solo was a great captain but after going through this list there are so many other people who were just great captains all around.

Take Captain Reynolds of Serenity and how he captained his ship and crew. He was almost a reinvention of Han Solo himself.

However, although I am not as big a fan of Star Trek you can’t deny the presence and demeanor of Captain Kirk it almost goes unsaid when you think of Star Ship captains he has to be at the top of the list.

So who is the greatest star ship captain?

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — He has finally ditched the scooter, which is a relief. The four-wheeled contraption was light, it was handy, and it allowed Ryan Mallett to get around quite nicely while the broken bone in his left foot healed. But even with a bicycle bell affixed to the handlebars by a student trainer, it wasn’t stylish transportation.

No, it looked “funny,” and Mallett was embarrassed to be seen riding it. And unfortunately, it was a sure-fire conversation starter.

“The people that enjoy Arkansas football,” he said, “will come and talk.”

Around here, that’s just about everybody. Of course, around here, just about everybody already recognized the Arkansas quarterback. But add the scooter, and there was no doubt.

Nor was there any doubt about the inevitable first question: How’s the foot? Specifics are hard to come by; Mallett has clearly been coached in the art of being vague. But in a teleconference a few days back, he said it’s healing nicely, that a second surgery last month to replace a screw wasn’t actually a setback and that he should be ready to roll by preseason practice. Sorry, “roll” wasn’t a great verb choice. Let’s go with run. Or more importantly, pass.

Consider it Mallett’s attempt to reassure the Arkansas fans who have been wondering, since Mallett broke the foot during a conditioning drill last February, whether it might be just another chapter in the overall narrative of Razorback football. Think Charlie Brown’s futility in kicking the football, and you’ve got the picture.

There’s more buzz preceding Arkansas’ 2010 campaign than anyone around here can remember. The pieces seem to be in place for a run at the SEC championship, or if you’re really optimistic, even beyond. In Bobby Petrino’s third season, the Hogs return 17 starters. For the first time in what seems like forever, that includes a franchise quarterback.

Mallett, a 6-foot-7, 235-pound junior, set or tied 16 school records last season, his first after transferring from Michigan. After a rocky start, the Razorbacks won five of their last six games — the loss came in overtime at LSU — and Mallett’s big right arm was a huge reason.

Movie Review – The Expendables (No Comments)

I just got back from seeing The Expendables. This was a movie I have been wanting to see for some time. Sylvester Stallone put together and all-star cast (action stars) and was tasked with providing the possibly guy movie of the decade. Stallone was one of the screenwriters and director for the anticipated film.

I want to premise this review with my expectations; which was to have an 80′s one liner throwback, lots of action, but very little dialogue. I was expecting it to just be a blow ‘em up and action packed movie from beginning to end. I was not expecting this to be a thinking movie or even one that I would talk about days on end. I was just hoping that it would be a fun filled popcorn movie.

However, this was a huge disappointment. The first 45 minutes were slow and very little action happened. When action did happen I was a bit dizzy because it was too much of a closeup and the camera was very shaky. The dialogue was very flat, but it wasn’t trying to be cheesy, it seemed like they were really pushing to be deep and have a message of self preservation.

There were some parts that I did find amusing and enjoyed a few scenes. This was all in all a very poor directed movie and once again just because there is an all-star cast does not mean it will be good. You would think I would learn from this but hope is always in the back of my mind.

The Expendables did not achieve what it was set out to do, I do not recommend this movie, if however you do have to see it wait until it hits the Redbox and save you a few bucks.

Hardware-Accelerated Flash Officially Released (No Comments)

Adobe elevated its “Gala” pre-release beta to final status today, releasing it as Flash Player 10.1.82.76 with support for some graphics coprocessors shipped with newer Macs. Making use of the new video acceleration API available in Mac OS X 10.6.3 or later, the update will only give improved performance to Macs with GPUs like the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, the GeForce 320M or GT 330M.

There are other limitations, such as when YouTube 480p HD videos are displayed in 864 x 480 resolution. According to Adobe engineer Tinic Uro, this forces a software fallback which means hardware acceleration is no longer available. Also, resolutions smaller than 480 x 320 pixels are not accelerated on NVIDIA GeForce 9400M based Macs, though on NVIDIA GeForce 320M and GeForce GT 330M the threshold may be a bit higher due to tradeoffs in the OS for power vs. performance optimization. As Adobe engineer Uro notes: “playing video has a fixed baseline cost in the GPU for instance which is not the case when you decode on a CPU.” The hardware decoder is limited to 2 instances at a time, so if you have more than 2 videos open at a time the third one will be software-decoded. And also, hardware acceleration will sometimes fail until Safari is restarted, which is an issue Adobe says they’re working on with Apple.

MacBooks shipped after January 21st, 2009
Mac Minis shipped after March 3rd, 2009
MacBook Pros shipped after October 14th, 2008
iMacs which shipped after the first quarter of 2009

Here’s a reason to dust off your Wii: When GoldenEye 007 comes out in November, you’ll have the option of buying it with a golden Classic Controller Pro. You can see it in the picture above. It’s a beauty, right? No word yet on the price, but seriously, when has James Bond ever cared about spending money — just charge it to British Intelligence.
Having played GoldenEye 007′s multiplayer, I feel confident saying that you should purchase this game upon its release. It’s a premium gaming product that will make you and three friends very, very happy. Throwing Oddjob’s killer hat is a great thing, made even better when using a blinged-out, gilded controller like the one you see above.

Bruce Campbell To Star In Burn Notice Prequel Movie (No Comments)

Didn’t see this one coming down the straight, no matter how big its chin.

Announced on the Burn Notice panel at Comic-Con today, a prequel movie to the series that will focus on Sam Axe, Bruce Campbell’s character, on his final mission as a Navy SEAL. The film will be set largely in Latin America, but it remains to be seen if it will be shot there.

And… that’s another film starring Bruce Campbell, so it can’t be all bad*. It’s also another film starring Bruce Campbell that seems tailor made for a TV premiere. Will we ever get a big-screen picture starring this man ever again? Bubba Nosferatu? Evil Dead 4? Time for me to let out a little sigh, I think. I’m not feeling too optimistic.

*My Name is Bruce what? The Man With the Screaming Brain who? No, I’ve never heard of Alien Apocalypse. Huh? Yeah, I’ve got my fingers in my ears – what about it?

I recently had to go toe the DMV, called ahead to understand what I needed as far as paper work goes. It is absolutely ridiculous. The people in there are a bit strange, mostly dunk and trying to take a driving test. Everyone is in line and herded in like animals.

My dad also had to go to the DMV and has yet after his 3rd attempt unable to obtain what he needs. I have the money in hand but the rules are so stupid like you need a blood sample and sign over your 1st born just to do something.

The only thing left to do is laugh about it and here is the comic that came out of it enjoy…

Unmanned Stealth Jet That Will Hit Targets in Another Continent (No Comments)

Looming ominously like a space ship from Star Wars, this is the future of unmanned flight.

Defence firm BAE Systems today officially unveiled its first ever high-tech unmanned stealth jet.

The Taranis, named after the Celtic god of thunder, is about the same size as a Hawk jet and is equipped with stealth equipment and an ‘autonomous’ artificial intelligence system.

The plane will test the possibility of developing the first ever autonomous stealthy Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV) that would ultimately be capable of precisely striking targets at long range, even in another continent.

The trial aircraft cost £143 million pounds to construct and spearheads BAE’s drive to convince the Ministry of Defence to invest in the next generation of unmanned aircraft.

Almost invisible to ground radar, it is designed to travel at high jet speeds and cover massive distances between continents.

The plane is built to carry out intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance on enemy territory using onboard sensors.

And it has been designed to carry a cache of weapons – including bombs and missiles -, giving it a potential long-range strike capability.

It can be controlled from anywhere in the world with satellite communications.

Experts say the cutting-edge design is at the forefront of world technology and as advanced as any US development.

The plane began development in December 2006, and is intended to prove the UK’s ability to produce a stealthy UAV.

Taranis will be stealthy, fast, able to carry out use a number of on-board weapons systems and be able to defend itself against manned and other unmanned enemy aircraft.

Any future need hinges on the outcome of the Strategic Defence and Security Review, which will conclude around October.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony at BAE Systems in Warton, Lancashire, Minister for International Security Strategy Gerald Howarth said: ‘Taranis is a truly trailblazing project.

‘The first of its kind in the UK, it reflects the best of our nation’s advanced design and technology skills and is a leading programme on the global stage.’

He added: ‘Taranis shows the UK’s advanced engineering, research, technology and innovation sector at its world-beating best.’

Taranis is an informal partnership of the UK MoD and industry British engineering firms including BAE Systems, Rolls Royce, QinetiQ and GE Aviation.

Rolls-Royce will focus on the next generation propulsion system for the Taranis demonstrator.

Speaking on behalf of the industry team, Nigel Whitehead, Group managing director of BAE Systems’ Programmes & Support business, said: ‘Taranis has been three and a half years in the making and is the product of more than a million man-hours.

‘It represents a significant step forward in this country’s fast-jet capability. This technology is key to sustaining a strong industrial base and to maintain the UK’s leading position as a centre for engineering excellence and innovation.”

The Taranis prototype will provide the MOD with knowledge on the technical and manufacturing challenges and the potential capabilities of Unmanned Combat Air Systems.

Test flights for the Taranis plane are due to start in 2011.

‘Google Me’ site may be in the works (No Comments)

Google Games, built around some sort of partnership with casual-gaming company Zynga, is in the works and would be part of a larger social network called Google Me, according to technology blog Tech Crunch.

Statements from notable internet players, including Digg founder Kevin Rose and a former Facebook chief technical officer, have suggested in recent weeks that the search-engine giant is working on a social network geared toward rivaling Facebook.

TechCrunch this weekend reported that unnamed sources said Google has invested between $100 and $200 million in Zynga, the maker of successful online social games like “FarmVille” and “Mafia Wars.”

The investment part of the deal was confirmed last month and a “larger strategic project” is still in the works, according to that report.

A Zynga spokeswoman said Monday that the company has no comment on the reports. A Google spokesman referred questions to the company’s media-relations e-mail account, which did not respond to inquiries.

The popularity of Zynga’s games — more than 50 million people play them on any given day, according to developerAnalytics — could bring considerable heft to any online networking or gaming project Google launched.

The obvious question then would become whether the “Farmville” maker would pull its games from Facebook. That would be a tall order considering the success those games have seen.

The TechCrunch report also added a new wrinkle to the Google Me speculation — saying the Zynga deal would be part of a project called Google Games, according to sources.

On the question-and-answer site Quora, former Facebook technical officer Adam D’Angelo said the Google Me rumors are real. The project would build on Google Buzz, a social networking effort rolled out by Google in February, he said. Google Buzz has been widely criticized by tech pundits.

Reports have not offered details on how a Google site would look, whether it would link to Gmail and other Google pages like Buzz does, or how Google Games would integrate with it.

“This is not a rumor. This is a real project. There are a large number of people working on it. I am completely confident about this,”D’Angelo wrote.

“They realized that Buzz wasn’t enough and that they need to build out a full, first-class social network. They are modeling it off of Facebook.”

Academic study says violent games reduce stress (No Comments)

Texas A&M International University recently conducted a study in which volunteers were subjected to stress, with some subjects being allowed to play video games afterward. According to the results, the game-playing group reported less stress and depression afterward.

In a conclusion contrary to many recent studies, the research conducted by Texas A&M Associate Professor Christopher Ferguson concluded that violent video games could actually combat anger and depression. The method of measurement came by subjecting four groups of predominantly Hispanic students to a scientifically-proven stress-inducer called the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Task. Afterward, two groups were given a violent game to play (Hitman: Blood Money or Call of Duty 2), one was given a non-violent game (Madden 2007) and a final group was told they wouldn’t be able to play any games due to a malfunction.

While Ferguson concluded that the game-playing groups exhibited less hostility and depression, the professor presented a caveat regarding the conclusion–that the uniqueness of the control groups could reveal different results with a larger and more diverse pool of subjects. I am one of many people looking forward to the highly anticipated Star Wars MMO. It is set 300 years after the original Star Wars knights of the Old Republic and 3,000 years before Star Wars The Phantom Menace. There are many aspects of why I am looking forward to this game mainly because it is Star Wars, but also because I am hoping that it lives up to what all the hype. We need a competitor to the most dominating MMO of all time WOW. One can only hope.

GUILLEMOTS and gannets do it. Cormorants and kingfishers do it. Even the tiny insect-eating dipper does it. And if a plan by the Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) succeeds, a remarkable airplane may one day do it too: plunge beneath the waves to stalk its prey, before re-emerging to fly home.

The DARPA plan, announced in October 2008, calls for a stealthy aircraft that can fly low over the sea until it nears its target, which could be an enemy ship, or a coastal site such as a port. It will then alight on the water and transform itself into a submarine that will cruise under water to within striking distance, all without alerting defences.

That, at least, is the plan. The agency is known for taking on brain-twistingly difficult challenges. So what about DARPA’s dipper? Is it a ridiculous dream? “A few years ago I would have said that this is a silly idea,” says Graham Hawkes, an engineer and submarine designer based in San Francisco. “But I don’t think so any more.”

DARPA, which has a $3 billion annual budget, has begun to study proposed designs. In the next year or so it could begin allocating funding to developers. Though the agency itself is unwilling to comment, Hawkes and others working on rival designs have revealed to New Scientist how they would solve the key problems involved in building a plane that can travel under water – or, to put it another way, a flying submarine.

How to subscribe to The Ord Podcast in iTunes (No Comments)

I have recently been asked that The Ord is hard to find in iTunes. I am going to make this a sticky and hopefully help in getting you set up.

The first thing you have to do is you have to have iTunes on your PC or Mac (Mac already has it installed by default). To get it go here just download it to your desktop and install, just follow the default wizard and you should be good to go.

Open iTunes and on the left pane you will see iTunes Store

You will have to set up an apple account (don’t worry it is free)

Once you have it installed you can do one of two things you can go directly to the podcast here on The Ord and click on the iPod.

Once you click the iPod image it will take you to this page within iTunes

Click the “Subscribe Free” button below The Ord Logo and follow the prompts and that is it. You can download any and all shows.

The second way is to go directly to the iTunes store and type in the search field located on the top right of iTunes “Jacob Kern” Click on The Ord Logo and subscribe like mentioned above.

The Force will be strong with our younglings this fall, when Sony Online Entertainment releases Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, a free-to-play, kid-friendly online PC game.

Clone Wars Adventures (trailer embedded above) will deliver a suite of online mini-games themed around the Clone Wars cartoon, all wrapped in a social environment that lets players customize a character, buy pets and compete against friends in daily challenges.

While kids can play for free, a monthly membership fee will get them even more stuff to do — and there will be FarmVille-style microtransactions using Sony’s Station Cash system.
