Looks like the best show on TV is not going anywhere…

by Maureen Ryan, posted Dec 6th 2010 10:15AM

In the grand scheme of things, how important is one magazine’s Fan Favorite poll? Perhaps not all that important.

But I must admit, I was quite cheered to learn that ‘Supernatural’ won TV Guide’s first annual Fan Favorite poll, and thus the CW show will get its first-ever TV Guide cover with the Dec. 13 issue (it hits the stands Dec. 9).

Sure, it’s fun to see Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles pull their best ‘Zoolander’ faces for the cover (that is always entertaining). But the cover represents additional recognition for the drama, which it richly deserves. As I noted in my review of Friday’s episode, ‘Supernatural’ is having one hell of a good season. Will end up being as truly glorious as season 4 or season 2? Who knows, but ‘Supernatural’ always seems to do well with its even-numbered seasons.

In any event, in its sixth season, the show has essentially reconfigured its DNA in highly intriguing ways instead of resting on its laurels. I can’t think of many shows that were this creative this late into their runs. There aren’t a lot.

Didn’t see this one coming down the straight, no matter how big its chin.

Announced on the Burn Notice panel at Comic-Con today, a prequel movie to the series that will focus on Sam Axe, Bruce Campbell’s character, on his final mission as a Navy SEAL. The film will be set largely in Latin America, but it remains to be seen if it will be shot there.

And… that’s another film starring Bruce Campbell, so it can’t be all bad*. It’s also another film starring Bruce Campbell that seems tailor made for a TV premiere. Will we ever get a big-screen picture starring this man ever again? Bubba Nosferatu? Evil Dead 4? Time for me to let out a little sigh, I think. I’m not feeling too optimistic.

*My Name is Bruce what? The Man With the Screaming Brain who? No, I’ve never heard of Alien Apocalypse. Huh? Yeah, I’ve got my fingers in my ears – what about it?

Found Here…

Last night was the end of a show I was extremely fond of. I am of course talking about Lost and honestly I am still a bit lost (pun intended). I really enjoyed the show over the years but I also have a mixed bag of emotion about it actually ending. I am glad that it is over instead of just dragging on, but I am also going to be disappointing because I am going to be lost on what to do on my Tuesday nights. I guess I could read a book or maybe spend time with the wife. Lost will be missed by me and many other fans I am sure. I think it will always play a huge era in my life when looking back on the years to come. I hope JJ Abrams continues to write and direct intriguing shows and movies like Lost.

One of my favorite shows on TV these days is Supernatural I have mentioned on the The Ord Podcast and I have to say that with the premier last week I am again psyched about this series. In previous years of the show I would always catch the middle to tail end of the show that was just before it known as Smallville which I am not a big fan of, but I could at least bare it.

A few weeks ago I finally watched the movie Twilight and I was somewhat impressed, it was pretty good, but I am not like a huge fan by any means. It was more for younger teenagers and not necessarily for my age group. Why do I bring this up, well because I settled in last Thursday to catch the Season Premier of Supernatural and as usual I was going to watch whatever was on (expecting Smallville), but to my surprise it was a new show called Vampire Diaries. I couldn’t even watch it, it was so bad. It was such a Rip off of Twilight, I mean just the little part I watched I think all they did was change the names and change the actors who played them, but seriously how about some originality.

Anyway, I only brought this up because; I am just tired of the same old stuff. I love to be entertained as I am sure many of you do, but how about some variety some different ideas and set the bar higher, go out on a limb once in a while, and quit doing what “you” think is popular (talking to TV producers). I realize it comes down to money, but think about all the great shows, movies, and documentaries that went on a limb and had a huge following later when it was not appreciated for what it was at that given time.

The best example for this I can give is Firefly. This was a show that I watched and in my opinion probably the best produced, directed, and written sci-fi TV series in Television history. It aired 1 season was canceled and because it had such a following and could not be ignored they actually made a movie called Serenity that finished out the series. Again, it was a very risky idea that should have continued but because the “ratings” weren’t where they should have been it was once again canned, I beg anyone out there to bring a great possibly risky idea to the mainstream and take a chance on it. Know that if it has good writing it will be successful, stop worrying about the norm and start worrying about the art form it brings.

UPDATE

DOH! I have been corrected, Apparently, The Vampire Diaries was written 10+ years before Twilight…My Bad – However – still sucks.
