Here’s what we know about The Dark Tower to date. It’s the Stephen King work that’s been planned for adaptation by Ron Howard, who is looking to do part of the story as a series of movies, and the rest as an NBC television series.

Ron Howard is set to direct the opening movie, and possibly the first season of the TV show, and Javier Bardem has been cast in the lead role as the Gunslinger, and MTV is linking the likes of Naomie Harris with the project too.

Furthermore, it’s now been revealed, too that Mark Verheiden has signed up to co-write and produce the television segment of the project. He’s got a background in the likes of Heroes, Falling Skies and – yes! - Battlestar Galactica.

This still leaves up in the air the question over who will take charge of later films. But given that we’re looking at easily one of the more ambitious attempts to bring a book to the screen, then it’s understandable that it’s going to take time for everything to slot into place.

We’ll have more on The Dark Tower on the site on Monday.

Not the Star Wars you grew up with, to be sure, but a fresh new take on George Lucas’s enduring space opera for the post-9/11 era. In fact, you wouldn’t be far off if you likened supervising director Dave Filoni’s reimagining of Star Wars to Ronald D. Moore and David Eick’s take on Battlestar Galactica. Especially since BSG-alum Katee Sackhoff is voicing a character on The Clone Wars next season!

After TRON: Legacy landed with a thud, I’ve found it difficult to care about where the story goes from here.  However, Disney still believes in their black-and-neon franchise and they’re moving forward with the new animated series TRON: Uprising.  The series will air on Disney XD in summer 2012 and cover the events between the original TRON and Legacy.  A teaser trailer for the series has gone online and if you loved TRON: Legacy, then you’ll probably love this too.  It has light cycles and stuff.

More promising is an upcoming remix of TRON: Legacy’s outstanding score.  Pitchfork reports that Disney will release Tron: Legacy R3CONFIGUR3D on April 5th and it will feature M83, Photek, Moby, Com Truise, and others remixing Daft Punk’s score.  The remix soundtrack is available to buy in various special editions on the score’s official website.  Hit the jump to check out the TRON: Uprising trailer and the track list for Tron: Legacy R3CONFIGUR3D.

Though Marvel is releasing Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger this year, everyone knows the true flick that has fans waiting with baited breath is the all-star event that is The Avengers. Writer/director Joss Whedon is assembling his team of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johanssen to start shooting the film very soon. While plot details are under lock and key, James Gunn, writer/director of the Rainn Wilson indie-superhero flick Super recently spoke to Wired about what he’s heard regarding Whedon’s script for The Avengers:

“Everybody I know who’s read it says it’s by far the best script for a Marvel movie ever. I’m very, very excited about it. Nobody loves superheroes more than Joss. He’s really got his heart in the right place.”

I think fans the world over can effectively let out a tiny sigh of relief at that confirmation from cult-favorite Gunn, though the anticipation/trepidation is far from over as the flick’s got a long way to go before it reaches audiences. The refreshingly candid interview with Gunn revolves around Hollywood’s current obsession with superhero movies, and is definitely worth checking out over at Wired. The Avengers is slated for a May 4th, 2012 release.

Let’s immediately make one thing clear, I love Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series. So much so, that I have been nervous for years as the rumors have swirled around potential movies, miniseries, and TV shows adapted from the seven (BUT SOON TO BE EIGHT) books. At one time, J.J. Abrams was said to have finally gotten the green light from Stephen King and bought the rights to make it for a symbolic $19. However, now the torch has been passed to director Ron Howard and plans are moving forward for three feature films and two seasons of a television series. So, now the looming question is who will be cast in this epic undertaking? Here are my picks for The Dark Tower cast (though of course, casting unknowns would also be fantastic), includes choices for the Gunslinger, Eddie, Susannah, Jake, Susan Delgado, and The Man in Black.

Warner Bros. plans to begin streaming its movies through Facebook.  Facebook users will be able to rent and stream movies by spending Facebook credits and the studio plans to expand the program in the future to include purchasing as well as renting.  The first film available to watch via this new streaming service is The Dark Knight, which will cost you 30 credits (i.e. $3, but of course Facebook has its own currency).  More titles will become available for rental and purchase in the coming months.

While it’s impressive that WB has found yet another revenue stream (they recently released “App Editions” of The Dark Knight and Inception and they’re launching a premium video-on-demand service in the coming months), the real story is Facebook.  We’re looking at the birth of yet another online competitor in the digital distribution world.  Consider how many platforms Facebook has for users to browse their site.  Now consider those platforms also allow you to rent and purchase movies through Facebook and you can see why this is a big deal.  While the service is currently only available via browser, I would expect it to eventually expand to mobile phones, Xbox 360, etc.  Hit the jump to check out the press release.

Starting today, millions of fans who “Liked” Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster film “The Dark Knight” can rent the title through its official Facebook Page (http://www.facebook.com/darkknight).  Consumers simply click on the “rent” icon to apply their Facebook Credits, and within seconds they will begin enjoying the film.  The cost per rental is 30 Facebook Credits or $3.  This offering is presently available only to consumers in the United States.  Additional titles will be made available for rental and purchase on a regular basis over the coming months.

“Facebook has become a daily destination for hundreds of millions of people,” said Thomas Gewecke, President of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution.  “Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts.  It gives consumers a simple, convenient way to access and enjoy our films through the world’s largest social network.”

Fans will have full control over the film while watching it through their Facebook account for up to 48 hours from purchase.  They can choose to watch it in full screen, pause the movie, and resume playing it when they log back into Facebook.  Consumers will also have full Facebook functionality including the ability to post comments on the movie, interact with friends and update their status.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that producer Christopher Nolan and director Zack Snyder are zeroing in on an intriguing actor to play the villain: Viggo Mortensen.

Mortensen, who is still in negotiations for Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, is said to be at the top of the list to play General Zod, the evil and super-powered scientist who was portrayed byTerrence Stamp in 1980′s Superman II. If Mortensen’s Snow White deal doesn’t close, that would potentially free him up to makeSuperman. Or Universal and Warner Bros. could work out his schedule and enable him to do both.

Sources say no talks have commenced and that Mortensen is just a “person of interest,” much likeKevin Costner is for the role of Jonathan Kent. The actors aren’t the only ones considered for their respective roles, though they are the ones most seriously talked about.

Snyder is in the midst of meeting actors for not only the role of Zod and Kent, but the three female parts well. Given the Nolan pedigree with the Batman films and the tenpole nature of a Superman film, the roles are considered some of the hottest and most-desired in town.

EXCLUSIVE: I’m told that there is heightened interest in Kevin Costner for a key role in the Superman reboot that is being directed by Zack Snyder for Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures. Henry Cavill was recently set in the Man of Steel role. I’m not exactly sure what role Costner is likely to play, but he has certainly been in good guy mode lately. Beyond his performance in the John Wells-directed The Company Men, Costner surfaced as an unlikely hero in aiding the cleanup in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. British Petroleum purchased over 30 centrifuge machines which separate oil  from water, technology that was developed with a reported $24 million in funding by the actor over 15 years.

The Superman film is being produced by Chris Nolan, Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, and Deborah Snyder. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers. The new Superman is targeted for release in December 2012.

Word is Martin Freeman will soon be set to play Bilbo Baggins, that Jimmy Nesbitt has been offered a role and that Michael Fassbender is being pursued for another as is David Tennant. Ian McKellan and Andy Serkis are expected to reprise Gandalf and Gollum.

While it looks like production on The Hobbit is set to start in February on the pair of films directed by Peter Jackson, there are still a few giant issues standing in the way. The films had to go in early 2011 to make the holiday release date. But even though the production schedule looks locked, there’s still the issue of the loud labor fight happening between Jackson and the unions, which have told performers outright not to work on the film because it’s a non-union production. By agreeing to a detente, the films would indeed get underway in New Zealand in early 2011. The delay has also been caused by all the ongoing problems at MGM, and just this week Lionsgate put forth a merger recommendation which Carl Icahn backs. That would obviously affect the pending Spyglass deal  – and add more drama to any major production going forward. (Meanwhile, while MGM goes through all of its tumult, Mary Parent is expectedly in the process of leaving the studio, which she has run for almost three years.) And the financial questions surrounding The Hobbit still remain: How much of the $500 million bill is Warner Bros footing? And who will eventually pony up for MGM’s part. MGM owns international distribution rights. Another delay in all of this has been the negotiation with Jackson. He co-wrote the script and was always a producer, but he only came on board recently to replace Guillermo del Toro as director. December 2012 is the release date for the first first film and the second comes one year later. Both are in 3D.

Didn’t see this one coming down the straight, no matter how big its chin.

Announced on the Burn Notice panel at Comic-Con today, a prequel movie to the series that will focus on Sam Axe, Bruce Campbell’s character, on his final mission as a Navy SEAL. The film will be set largely in Latin America, but it remains to be seen if it will be shot there.

And… that’s another film starring Bruce Campbell, so it can’t be all bad*. It’s also another film starring Bruce Campbell that seems tailor made for a TV premiere. Will we ever get a big-screen picture starring this man ever again? Bubba Nosferatu? Evil Dead 4? Time for me to let out a little sigh, I think. I’m not feeling too optimistic.

*My Name is Bruce what? The Man With the Screaming Brain who? No, I’ve never heard of Alien Apocalypse. Huh? Yeah, I’ve got my fingers in my ears – what about it?

Granite I am only on book 3 about 1/2 way through, but it is a page turner I cannot put it down I just want more, more and even more. The good news is it looks like J.J. Abrams one of the creators of Lost (one of the best shows ever), also the new re-launch of Star Trek as well as many others will be creating this movie from this book. The only problem I see is that there are seven of them and it is going to be hard to even do one of the books because of all the back stories and characters involved. Think back a few years when the Lord of the Rings series came out and how hard it was although they turned out great the books were barely touched in the amount of content that was involved. I would assume that J.J Will have to break it up into multiple movies at least 3 but I could see doing an entire movie just based on how the Gunslinger came about (Rolland is the main character, Gunslinger). Just like The Hobbit was a prequel to Lord of the Rings Gunslinger is or should be the prequel to The Dark Tower.

Speaking of the Lord of the Rings there is a great article over at Unreality Magazine that talks about the characters and actors who should play them. The picture to the right is Viggo Mortenson who would play a great Roland Deschain.

I would have to agree with most of the choices, however, I am still in the middle of book three and I do not know some of the characters yet. This gives me joy and hope. I should also point out I have never read a Stephen King Novel before but after what I have read so far, for my fathers sake i will be picking up a few more of his books.
